Overview
Paul L.A.H. Chartrand is Senior Counsel with Macpherson Law LLP and one of Canada’s most respected scholars and practitioners in constitutional and Indigenous rights law. He is widely regarded as a leading contributor to the canon of Canadian constitutional and Indigenous legal scholarship, with hundreds of publications to his name spanning decades of research, writing, and public engagement.
For many years, Paul taught Indigenous law and constitutional law at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, where he educated and mentored generations of lawyers, academics, and policy leaders who are now at the forefront of Indigenous and public law practice across Canada. His academic work has had a lasting influence on the development of Indigenous rights jurisprudence, constitutional interpretation, and the understanding of Indigenous–Crown relations.
In addition to his academic distinction, Paul is called to the bar and brings a rare combination of scholarly depth and practical legal insight to his work. His career reflects a lifelong commitment to advancing the legal, constitutional, and human rights interests of Indigenous peoples, both within Canada’s constitutional framework and in alignment with international human rights standards.
Paul has long been engaged in matters at the intersection of constitutional law, Indigenous rights, and United Nations–based human rights instruments. His current interests include the interpretation and implementation of UNDRIP, DRIPA, the Natural Resources Transfer Agreements (NRTA), and related constitutional issues affecting the wellbeing, self-determination, and economic advancement of Indigenous peoples in Canada.
