Overview

Mike Nienhuis is a distinguished solicitor whose deep business experience combined with sharp legal acumen makes him a trusted advisor for Indigenous communities and enterprises pursuing community transforming development. With a background that spans executive leadership roles, entrepreneurial insight, and comprehensive legal practice, Mike brings a breadth of experience that positions him uniquely to advance the economic flourishing of First Nations, both on and off reserve.

Prior to entering the legal profession, Mike held executive roles with technology firms in Vancouver, Seattle, and San Diego, with responsibilities for sales and operations across North America, Europe, and Asia. This international business grounding gives him a practical, operational perspective that clients often highlight as invaluable when navigating legal issues tied closely to commercial reality.

Since being called to the bar, Mike has built a legal career marked by increasing leadership on First Nations major projects.  He frequently advises First Nations, private developers, and business enterprises in transactions involving First Nations lands, clean energy and natural resource projects (on Crown, First Nations, and privately owned land), as well as real estate development and commercial leasing.

He is adept at the many complex and intersecting issues of law and policy tied to Indigenous land development: implementation of land codes and related Indigenous law matters, realizing projects on reserve lands, structuring acquisitions, dispositions, financing, rezoning, subdivisions, and other real estate development processes.

Areas of Specialization include:

  • Indigenous Law / First Nations Lands (transactions, land codes, reserve lands, ATR)
  • Commercial Real Estate (acquisition, disposition, leasing, subdivision, rezoning)
  • Corporate‑Commercial Law (joint ventures, partnerships, corporate agreements)
  • Natural Resource & Clean Energy Projects (development, financing, regulatory and tenure matters)

Clients appreciate Mike’s ability to manage risk, clarify the applicable law (provincial, federal, Indigenous), and help negotiate agreements that lead to long‑lasting economic benefit.  He is distinguished not only by his legal acumen but by the way he brings cross‑sectoral experience, commercial savvy, and a deep commitment to helping Indigenous communities realize their economic potential.

Whether structuring large real estate development, advising on resource tenure and clean energy, or assisting with First Nations land law and policy, Mike’s approach is responsive, strategic, and grounded in achieving real outcomes.

When not practicing law, Mike enjoys spending time with his wife and playful goldendoodle.
