Overview
Peter Torn is a senior corporate lawyer and former General Counsel with nearly two decades of experience advising public and private companies across the mining, manufacturing, and technology sectors. Called to the bar in 2006, he holds a JD from the University of British Columbia and an MBA, bringing a combined legal and business perspective to complex corporate and commercial matters. His practice is defined by a pragmatic, execution-focused approach grounded in extensive in-house leadership experience.
Over the course of his career, Peter Torn has served as General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for TSX- and NYSE-listed companies, working closely with CEOs, CFOs, and boards on governance, continuous disclosure, and strategic decision-making. He has led and executed a wide range of cross-border transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, financings, joint ventures, and large-scale commercial agreements across Canada, the United States, Europe, and Asia. His experience spans the full lifecycle of corporate activity—from structuring and negotiation through to execution and post-closing integration—often in complex, highly regulated environments.
At MacPherson Law LLP, Peter serves as Senior Counsel, where he advises clients on corporate, commercial, and regulatory matters. His work includes supporting Indigenous Nations and their business enterprises, as well as companies operating in resource, infrastructure, and technology sectors. He provides strategic counsel on governance, risk management, and complex contracting, and brings particular expertise in emerging areas such as privacy, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence governance, supported by his CIPP/E and AIGP designations.
In addition to his legal practice, Peter has contributed to legal education as a sessional instructor and associate professor at UBC and BCIT, teaching corporate, construction, and employment law. He is a long-standing member of the Canadian Bar Association and has been nominated for the National Post and ZSA Canadian General Counsel Award. He is admitted to practice in British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario.
Outside of his practice, Peter greatly values time with his family and maintains a strong connection to the West Coast. He splits his time between Vancouver and Victoria and, when not working, spends as much time outdoors as possible.
